A GUERRA A QUEM A TRABALHA
Eu não declarei guerra a ninguém e, por enquanto, tenho a sorte de ninguém me a ter declarado. Quem me conheça não está à espera de me ver, à noite, no Bairro Alto, munido de copo, mísseis de cruzeiro e lança-granadas. Dói-me a facilidade com que as pessoas "intervêm" na Jugoslávia, em contraste com o silêncio manifestado nos inúmeros casos de violência quotidiana que presenciam. Pesa-me a sua ronceira resignação diante das autoridades. A limpeza étnica a que se assiste no Kosovo não é só o fruto da acção descabelada dos exércitos de um tirano. É o resultado das nossas pobres mentalidades que exultam com os Afonsos Henriques, Vascos da Gama, Albuquerques e todos os que foram promovidos a heróis nacionais à conta das limpezas étnicas que fizeram. Os próprios hinos nacionais são um apelo à violência e à invasão. A História de Portugal, de que nos orgulhamos, é uma história de limpezas étnicas. A da Europa, da Ásia e da América, idem. Se quiséssemos verdadeiramente evitar a tragédia dos albaneses do Kosovo, há muito que deveríamos ter começado a lutar contra a ordem, o medo, a opressão e a obediência, que é a matéria de que são feitas todas as guerras e ditaduras.
Choca-me que pessoas sem poder nenhum andem a lutar pelos interesses estratégicos dos poderosos: a Banca, a Bolsa, os grupos económicos e indústrias do armamento, cujos lucros têm subido nos Estados Unidos desde o início da guerra. Se os governos e generais fossem movidos por razões humanitárias, estariam mais facilmente nos escuteiros ou nas carmelitas descalças. Se essas fossem as verdadeiras razões, já se teria acabado com a pobreza nem que fosse à granada. E porque é que não se lança uma bomba atómica sobre a servidão?
Esta guerra transporta a ilusão de que nós podemos intervir abstracta e globalmente em todo o lado, sem consequências, o que é uma desculpabilização por não intervirmos de forma efectiva em lado nenhum. Para além da manipulação da opinião pública, tendente a fazer de cada cidadão um justiceiro de trazer por casa "agarrado" à guerra em directo, há por detrás desta guerra o exercício de uma chantagem. A de que a globalização nos deve levar a aprovar os bombardeamentos de tipo "humanitário" e que, caso contrário, devemos ser considerados uns monstros impiedosos e desumanos.
O que é que arrisca o anónimo apoiante desta guerra? A opinião, apenas. Se, em consequência, amanhã lhe cortarem a gasolina, virá para a rua exigir o fim do esforço bélico. Se esta guerra durar muito, haverá até quem se farte de Kosovares e desligue o televisor. No mínimo, aqueles que subscrevem a opção marcial, a começar pelos chefes de estado e de governo, deviam estar dispostos a alistar-se e a combater ao lado daqueles que dizem defender. I did not declare war against anyone and, for the meantime, I'm lucky enough for not being declared war against by anyone. The people who know me are definitely not expecting to see me at night, at Bairro Alto, with a beer glass on one hand, and a cruising missile or a grenade-launcher on the other. People's easiness to "intervene" in Yugoslavia hurts me, it is something so contrary to the silence made in respect of the numberless examples of daily violence that we experience in every corner. It concerns me the sluggish way people bow before authorities. The ethnic cleansing that is being made in Kosovo is not solely due to the stupidly overreaction of a tyrant's army force. It is the result of our puny minds that praise the Afonsos Henriques(1) , the Vascos da Gama(2) and the Albuquerques(3) and all those that were turned into National Heroes thanks to their own ethnic cleansings. The actual national anthems are nothing but a call to arms, violence and invasion. Portugal's History, with which we are so proud, is a History of ethnic cleansings. Europe's, Asia's and America's are the same thing. If we really wished to avoid the Albanians' tragedy in Kosovo, we should have, long ago, fought against order, fear, oppression and obedience, for such is the stuff from which wars and dictatorships are made on.
It appals me that people with no power whatsoever are willing to fight for the strategic interests of the Overlords: the Banks, the Stock Markets, the economical lobbies, the war industries. In the United States, their profit has been increasing since the war started. If the governments and the generals worked for humanitarian sakes, perhaps they should join Seven Sisters, or the Scouts. If those were the main issues, perhaps poverty should have ended by now. Hand-grenade busted. And why not nuke servitude?
This war carries the illusion that we are entitled to intervene anywhere, abstractly and globally, regardless the consequences, which is to say that we're excused for not intervene effectively in some specific place. Besides the public opinion manipulation, that turns every single citizen into an easy chair bound punisher, addicted to "Live War", this war implies blackmail policies. Specifically, the idea that globalization should make us approve "humanitarian" bombings and, if we don't do that, then we should be regarded as inhuman, merciless monsters.
What does the anonymous supporter of this war puts at stake here? His personal opinion, nothing more. If tomorrow, as a consequence, he has no more gas for his car, then he will cross the streets shouting for war's end. And if this war lasts too long, some people ¾ and there's no doubt about that ¾ will be fed up with Kosovars and turn off the TV set. At least, those in favour of the martial option (chiefly, Government and State leaders) should be able and willing to enlist and fight side by side with those they claim to defend. The War to whom it belongs!
